Currently enjoying life to the fullest. Truly am the luckiest guy in the world.
This lovely weekend, I discovered by sheer accident, onto a time machine that costs me a mere 25$. This time machine immediately took me to my childhood as soon as I set my eye on it. No, I’m not referring to Uncle Rico’s crystal powered crotch riding time machine; what I’m referring to is nostalgia.
This past weekend, I spent time hanging with my lovely girl all day Saturday. After a lovely breakfast at Green Eggs café , we decided to go for a walk near Rittenhouse square in center city Philadelphia. The weather was lovely and perfect for a nice stroll accompanied with some shopping. Unbeknownst to us, Walnut Street was closed for a festival, which was cool. The streets were full of vendor booths, all selling sorts of items ranging from apparel, art work, food, and of course free stuff.
We stopped at the Barnes & Noble’s on 12th street to use the facilities, the couple cups of coffee and water during breakfast made nature call to us. During our “Search for the missing mysterious bathroom” adventure, I stumbled upon a table showcasing, Barnes & Noble’s library leather-bound collections. These all look pretty sweet, but my eye immediately went to the Jurassic Park/Lost world book!
It immediately took me back to my early teens, staying up late reading the original paperback novel by Michael Crichton in my bed.
That was way back in 1993, the book was a gift from my father who knew I was excited about the upcoming movie, because I wouldn’t stop talking about it, since I saw the super bowl trailer on TV. I forget who was playing in the superbowl, but I clearly remember the 30 second trailer.
I immediately cursed myself for not popping a vhs tape in the vcr to record it (yes kids, we didn’t have DVR back then). It was over in a flash, but the scene where Dr. Grant and the two kids running in an open field, while a heard of Gallimimus were chasing them was immediately burned in my brain. Dinosaurs and humans together in the world today, my 12 year old brain was blown.
I remember I couldn’t wait to go to school the next day to talk about it with my friends. I remembered the agonizing wait in June, as I counted down every day on my calendar till the release date. I remembered the theater we went too, I remembered my younger brother being scared, I remembered how excited I was during the helicopter arrival scene to the island, and I remembered the goose bumps I had when the first dinosaur was shown on screen.
After the movie ended, during the credits the words “Based on the novel by Michael Crichton” appeared on screen. I exclaimed “This was a book?!?!”, well of course, I had to read it!!! Like stated previously, I would not stop talking about it to my parents and eventually my father caved and got me the book.
The power of nostalgia! Of course I picked up the book and couldn’t wait to start re-reading the books that night. Right now, it’s sitting on my office desk, and I’m counting down the minutes to lunch where I could continue my reading.

Some amazing Doctor Who fanart by Robin E Kaplan!
While bicycling at the gym this evening, I saw a man on the news. He received a post card written over 55 years ago addressed to him. For some reason, I almost started crying while on the bicycle. We all know I am no crier.
Every now and then we all have a moment like this. Our emotions are what makes us what we are, delicate and fragile creatures.
